A simple addon to save and restore your settings. With this addon you can:
- Create a backup for the user.cfg and system.cfg files.
- Restore user.cfg and system.cfg files from a backup.
- Clear the user.cfg and system.cfg files by removal. FreeCAD will create new config files after restart.
- Reset all toolbars. Useful when for example the Ribbon UI is disabled or uninstalled.
- Start FreeCAD in safe mode.
This addon can be installed via the Addon Manager.
Alternatively, you can clone or download this repository in the workbench folder of FreeCAD. Standard this is:
- Windows -> "%APPDATA%\FreeCAD\Mod" which is usually "C:\Users\username\Appdata\Roaming\FreeCAD\Mod"
- Linux -> By default, the Workbench directory is the (hidden) "./.FreeCAD/Mod" directory in your home-directory
- MacOs -> There are two possible locations for your Addon workbench 'Mods':
- All Users: "/Applications/FreeCAD.app/Contents/Resources/Mod/"
- Current user only: "/Users/myusername/Library/Application Support/FreeCAD/Mod/"
To create a backup, select at least one of the config files.

Then click "Save settings".
a File dialog will open were you can select the location to save the backup. The backup will be a ZIP-archive.
The filename is predefined like: "2025_05_02_13_24_05 - FreeCAD Settings.zip". You can change this to your liking.
To restore a backup, select at least one of the config files.

Then click "Restore settings".
a File dialog will open where you can select the backup.
If the backup contains the selected config files, The current config files will be replaced with the ones from the backup.
FreeCAD will restart immediately.
To clear, select at least one of the config files.

Then click "Clear settings".
The selected config file(s) will be deleted and FreeCAD will restart immediately.
To restore toolbars, click simply "Restore toolbars". All toolbars will be enabled and FreeCAD will restart immediately.
The interface of FreeCAD can look messy. Don't worry, after restart FreeCAD will look normal.
To start FreeCAD in safe mode, simply click the button "Start FreeCAD in safe mode".
You can find the "Save and restore" button in the Tools menu (Windows and Linux) or the application menu (MacOS).
