OpenSSF / Linux Foundation — Technical Community Engagement #94

Description

@aetherxeg-source

Status

OPEN — CURRENT-STATE BASELINE FROZEN / EXTERNAL SUBMISSION BLOCKED UNTIL SELF-SERVICE REHEARSAL PASSES

Source of truth

  • public main: 48e0b9a0707553349e75e97a9dfa096d13f9ab5d
  • current public release: v0.1.0-alpha.4
  • baseline: OPENSSF_CURRENT_STATE_BASELINE.md
  • working branch: external/openssf-engagement-alpha4

Historical OpenSSF outreach referenced alpha.3. That version reference is historical only and must not be reused as current-state description.

Objective

Turn the prior OpenSSF response into structured technical community engagement focused on criticism, zero-assistance independent reproduction, architecture review, ecosystem overlap/interoperability, and evidence-driven improvements. This is not an endorsement, partnership, sales, or marketing program.

Fixed roles

  • Innovative Systems Architect — seek architecture improvements, not defenses.
  • Anti-Drift Reviewer — prevent conversion into PR/marketing.
  • Independent Falsifier — treat every criticism as a claim-kill attempt.
  • Claims Boundary Reviewer — keep all descriptions bounded by current evidence.
  • Open-Source Community Strategy Lead — enter OpenSSF respectfully and contribution-first.

Dynamic specialists are selected per gate: Linux security, ptrace, eBPF/BPF-LSM, LSM/SELinux/AppArmor, software supply-chain security, reproducibility, DevSecOps, and maintainer relations.

Governance rule

External criticism follows:

CLAIM -> CRITICISM -> TEST -> EVIDENCE -> DECISION

Never CRITICISM -> DEFENSE.

Mandatory gates

  1. Current-state / alpha.4 baseline — DONE.
  2. Repair stale public evaluation docs discovered during baseline freeze.
  3. Current OpenSSF WG matrix and primary/secondary path selection.
  4. OpenSSF-specific technical review pack with explicit review questions and prior-art boundary.
  5. Zero-assistance clean-environment rehearsal using public docs/artifacts only.
  6. Claims-boundary review and public-pack freeze.
  7. Prepare/send OpenSSF reply and enter selected community path.
  8. Record external feedback in docs/external/OPENSSF_FEEDBACK_LEDGER.md without outcome inflation.

Current blocker discovered

docs/TECHNICAL_EVALUATION.md and docs/INDEPENDENT_EVALUATION.md still identify alpha.3 as current; ROADMAP.md also contains stale M9.3 current-release wording. No OpenSSF technical submission until current evaluation documentation is repaired and independently rehearsed.

Membership boundary

Record OpenSSF membership as:

MEMBERSHIP_OPTION_AVAILABLE — NOT YET EVALUATED

No financial/legal commitment is authorized by this issue. Free community participation does not require organizational membership.

Success evidence

At least one of: independent reproduction, meaningful technical criticism, architecture improvement, integration opportunity, documented no-fit result, maintainer discussion, standards alignment, external contribution, or real ecosystem adoption path.

Entering a Working Group alone is not success.

    First OpenSSF engagement cycle — execution update

    Current public source at engagement start: 48e0b9a0707553349e75e97a9dfa096d13f9ab5d; current release v0.1.0-alpha.4.

    Completed

    • current-state baseline frozen in OPENSSF_CURRENT_STATE_BASELINE.md;
    • stale alpha.3 evaluation docs repaired to alpha.4;
    • docs/STATUS.md added to distinguish current state from historical milestone wording;
    • current OpenSSF Working Groups reviewed: PRIMARY_OPENSSF_PATH = ORBIT, SECONDARY_OPENSSF_PATH = Supply Chain Integrity only for a concrete provenance/attestation question;
    • docs/OPENSSF_TECHNICAL_REVIEW.md published with exact architecture, prior-art/overlap questions, claims boundaries and 5–10 minute reproduction path;
    • external feedback ledger and engagement record published;
    • zero-assistance public-artifact rehearsal passed on Ubuntu 24.04, run 36478741625, evidence artifact 10994536766 (sha256:9ea245278a2a43f182cda04cca6f5133ca88443138feca2949e887a94304e5c3);
    • final branch-head rehearsal also passed: run 36479236174;
    • PR OpenSSF: refresh alpha.4 technical review and community engagement pack #95 merged to main as a90c4c6e94129da5445aeed40863e097df045c28 (documentation/evaluation only; no runtime semantics change);
    • reply sent on the original OpenSSF/Linux Foundation email thread with alpha.4 links, ORBIT as intended first path, explicit technical questions, negative-evidence request, and no endorsement claim. Gmail message id: 1a0e9b49b189204b.

    External participation write friction

    An attempt to open a focused technical discussion directly in ossf/wg-orbit through the connected GitHub integration returned HTTP 403: Resource not accessible by integration.

    Classification: EXTERNAL_WRITE_TOOLING_LIMITATION — NOT AN ORBIT REJECTION.

    The proposed discussion was not claimed as posted. ORBIT's own CONTRIBUTING.md confirms that Slack is the best place for questions/ideas and GitHub Issues may be used for suggestions. The current connected GitHub App cannot write to the external repository.

    Membership

    MEMBERSHIP_OPTION_AVAILABLE — NOT YET EVALUATED FOR COMMITMENT.
    No financial/legal commitment initiated. Technical participation is available without membership and remains the priority.

    Current engagement state

    PUBLIC_PACK_READY / INTERNAL ZERO-ASSISTANCE REHEARSAL PASS / OPENSSF REPLY SENT / ORBIT DIRECT WRITE PENDING COMMUNITY-CHANNEL ACCESS

    This is not external validation or adoption. Next qualifying evidence must come from an external participant or substantive community response.

    OpenSSF ORBIT community entry — manual Slack channel completed

    Manual community-channel participation is now active in the OpenSSF Slack workspace.

    Evidence

    • joined the OpenSSF Slack workspace successfully;
    • joined #wg-orbit (ORBIT Working Group main channel);
    • posted the prepared ExecSurface technical-introduction message in #wg-orbit under Ahmed Younis;
    • message presents ExecSurface v0.1.0-alpha.4, links the public repository and docs/OPENSSF_TECHNICAL_REVIEW.md, explicitly requests reproduction attempts, ptrace-boundary criticism, prior-art/ecosystem overlap, and kernel-object/provenance architecture feedback;
    • message explicitly states that AETHER X is not seeking endorsement and welcomes counterexamples / negative results.

    Tooling note

    Attempting to install/connect ChatGPT directly inside the OpenSSF Slack workspace was blocked by OpenSSF workspace app policy (You are not authorized to install ChatGPT). This is an application-policy limitation, not a rejection of ExecSurface or ORBIT participation. Manual Slack participation remains available and was used successfully.

    Current engagement state

    PUBLIC_PACK_READY / ZERO-ASSISTANCE REHEARSAL PASS / OPENSSF EMAIL REPLY SENT / WG-ORBIT SLACK ENTRY COMPLETED / AWAITING SUBSTANTIVE EXTERNAL TECHNICAL RESPONSE

    No external validation, adoption, endorsement, or technical review result is claimed yet. The next qualifying evidence must be a substantive external response, independent reproduction, criticism, counterexample, integration discussion, or other technically meaningful community feedback.

    P8 handoff — external validation pack frozen

    P7 is now closed bounded and P8 is canonically tracked in #114.

    P8-A0 decision:
    P8_A0_EXTERNAL_VALIDATION_PACK_READY_BOUNDED

    Evidence:

    • A0 workflow source: 7ad1e6c139c4787f84e54261744a189e1835722a
    • run 36777065464 — SUCCESS
    • artifact 11125794344
    • digest sha256:7d4021b4d93760f594a4faf26ad8ace2b1cdc2874f288fcd6e753d781483bce5
    • decision commit: 00e3751d3ad881add11cf4833a294cd02edaa741

    Frozen evaluator materials:

    • docs/external/P8_EXTERNAL_EVALUATOR_PACKET.md
    • docs/external/P8_EXTERNAL_EVIDENCE_INTAKE_TEMPLATE.md
    • docs/development/P8_A0_EXTERNAL_EVIDENCE_PROTOCOL.md

    Classification remains strict:

    • historical EXT-0001 ptrace/LSM criticism is qualifying historical external architecture criticism already acted upon;
    • Linux Foundation/Rust Foundation routing is routing guidance, not validation;
    • ORBIT Slack entry is community participation, not validation;
    • internal rehearsal is pack-integrity evidence, not independent reproduction.

    Current exact state:
    P8_A0_PACK_READY / QUALIFYING_CURRENT_EXTERNAL_RESPONSE_PENDING

    Negative, failed, partial, no-fit, counterexample and interoperability results remain explicitly welcome. No endorsement/adoption claim is authorized.

    P8 sync — external validation now active

    The prior self-service/public-pack prerequisites have been completed under parent program #100 / P8 #114.

    Current P8 state is deliberately external-dependent:
    P8_EXTERNAL_EVIDENCE_INSUFFICIENT — CURRENT EXTERNAL INPUT PENDING

    Frozen evaluator packet:
    docs/external/P8_EXTERNAL_EVALUATOR_PACKET.md

    A current Track R zero-assistance reproduction request and a separate Track I interoperability-challenge request were sent after the P8-A0 freeze and logged in #114. These outbound requests are not counted as validation evidence.

    OpenSSF/ORBIT participation, routing, acknowledgement, or praise remains non-qualifying by itself. Only substantive technical reproduction/use evidence, criticism/counterexample/no-fit, interoperability guidance, or a real-workload report can advance P8.

    Administrative closeout: the OpenSSF/ORBIT engagement cycle completed its intended handoff. The public pack was prepared, rehearsed, the email reply was sent, ORBIT Slack entry was completed, and this issue explicitly transferred current external-validation authority to #114. Current external evidence remains pending under #114/#118/#159. Closing this Alpha.4 engagement tracker as completed; ORBIT participation is not being relabeled as validation, adoption, or endorsement.
