The wise programmer is told about Tao and follows it. The average programmer is told about Tao and searches for it. The foolish programmer is told about Tao and laughs at it.

聪明的程序员一朝闻道，余生行道；普通的程序员一朝闻道，余生寻道。愚蠢的程序员一朝闻道，只哈哈笑道。

A manager went to the Master Programmer and showed him the requirements document for a new application. The manager asked the Master: "How long will it take to design this system if I assign five programmers to it?"

一位主管找到编程大师，请他看一个应用程序的需求文档。主管问：“如果让 5 个程序员去设计这个系统，需要多长时间？”

"It will take one year," said the Master promptly.

“需要一年，”大师毫不犹豫地说。

"But we need this system immediately or even sooner! How long will it take if I assign ten programmers to it?"

“但我们现在就需要这个系统，越快越好！如果我找 10 个程序员呢？需要多长时间？”

The Master Programmer frowned. "In that case, it will take two years."

大师皱了皱眉头，“如此的话，需要两年。”

"And what if I assign a hundred programmers to it?"

The Master Programmer shrugged. "Then the design will never be completed," he said.

大师耸耸肩，“那这个设计就永远别想完成了。”

Prince Wang's programmer was coding software. His fingers danced upon the keyboard. The program compiled without and error message, and the program ran like a gentle wind.

王氏企业内，一名程序员正在编写软件。他的指尖在键盘上飞舞。程序编译时没有任何错误，运行起来如清风拂过，丝滑顺畅。

"Excellent!" the Prince exclaimed. "Your technique is faultless!"

“太棒了！”王总惊呼道，“你的技术简直完美！”

"Technique?" said the programmer, turning from his terminal, "What I follow is Tao -- beyond all techniques! When I first began to program, I would see before me the whole problem in one mass. After three years, I no longer saw this mass. Instead, I used subroutines. But now I see nothing. My whole being exists in a formless void. My senses are idle. My spirit, free to work without a plan, follows its own instinct. In short, my program writes itself. True, sometimes there are difficult problems. I see them coming, I slow down, I watch silently. Then I change a single line of code and the difficulties vanish like puffs of idle smoke. I then compile the program. I sit still and let the joy of the work fill my being. I close my eyes for a moment and then log off."

“技术？”程序员转过身，“我追求的是道——超越所有技术的道！我刚开始编程时，眼前的问题堆积成团、杂乱如麻。三年后，我再也没见过这样的问题，因为我学会了子程序。如今，我什么也看不见了。我的存在变得虚无，我感受不到任何事物。我的精神不受约束，全凭本能自由工作。换句话说，我写程序时，代码是一行行自己显现的。当然，有时我会碰到一些棘手的问题。我看着这些问题出现，我慢下来，静静地看着。然后我改动一行代码，问题像轻烟般自己消失了。我开始编译程序。我静静地坐着，感受着快乐盈满身心。我闭目冥想片刻，然后退出系统。”

Prince Wang said, "Would that all of my programmers were as wise!"

对应《庄子·养生主》庖丁解牛一节：
”庖丁為文惠君解牛，手之所觸，肩之所倚，足之所履，膝之所踦，砉然嚮然，奏刀騞然，莫不中音：合於《桑林》之舞，乃中《經首》之會。

文惠君曰：「嘻，善哉！技蓋至此乎？」

庖丁釋刀對曰：「臣之所好者，道也，進乎技矣。始臣之解牛之時，所見無非全牛者；三年之後，未嘗見全牛也。方今之時，臣以神遇而不以目視，官知止而神欲行。依乎天理，批大郤，導大窾，因其固然。技經肯綮之未嘗，而況大軱乎？

良庖歲更刀，割也；族庖月更刀，折也。今臣之刀十九年矣，所解數千牛矣，而刀刃若新發於硎。彼節者有闲，而刀刃者無厚，以無厚入有闲，恢恢乎其於游刃必有餘地矣，是以十九年而刀刃若新發於硎。雖然，每至於族，吾見其難為，怵然為戒，視為止，行為遲；動刀甚微，謋然已解，如土委地。提刀而立，為之四顧，為之躊躇滿志，善刀而藏之。」

文惠君曰：「善哉！吾聞庖丁之言，得養生焉。」“
