d. If you reach mining and haven't yet hit five steps, circle back to the original technology and pick the second most important, or well-known, or charismatic of its sub-components and continue the process. E.g. for the technology "pencil", you would choose pencil, graphite core, graphite mining, and then return to the pencil wood and then describing logging the wood used in pencils.
