Description

Ruby annotations are essential for Japanese language learners to be able to sound out words they do not already know. However they have historically had poor support on the web. This focus area is to improve the typography of Ruby annotations so they are useable by children and other Japanese language learners. This proposal includes:

  • ruby-position: alternate
  • ruby-overhang
  • text-transform: full-width
  • text-transform: full-sized-kana

It does not include ruby-merge

Specification

Additional Signals

Ruby bugs cause readability issues in web based books.

Note that the latest Ruby specification is here: https://github.com/w3c/html-ruby

The Ruby implementation leaves a lot to be desired.

A couple of key features are still missing:

  • Line-breakable ruby, implemented in Chrome 128.
  • display: ruby-base, ruby-base-container, and ruby-text-container implemented in Firefox 38

I would suggest that this title be changed to focus on Ruby, and that text-transform could open a new issue separately.

I'm open to that. Thanks for the suggestions of other APIs to include.
