The getDistance() function returns 255 almost all the time with the occasion (unrealistic) other answer.
I am running an Arduino Uno, and the Ultrasonic Sensor works perfectly fine with the Mindstorms NXT.

Hi! The most likely thing is that the Ultrasonic sensor isn't getting 7.2-9V. Please check the power supply and the jumpers, per https://www.wayneandlayne.com/bricktronics/sensors/.
