RLHF users, right now, inherit the worker class to extend available collective_rpc call. As we migrate to V1, the worker class they need to inherit will change.

This PR adds a worker_adapter_cls argument, which will be inheritted by vLLM's worker class automatically. Then RLHF users don't need to care about the underlying worker class used by vLLM.

NOTE: to use V1, right now they still need to use VLLM_ENABLE_V1_MULTIPROCESSING=0 , so that the ray placement group will be respected in the engine.

TODO: we should figure out if we can automatically pass the placement group information to the engine.

👋 Hi! Thank you for contributing to the vLLM project.

💬 Join our developer Slack at https://slack.vllm.ai to discuss your PR in #pr-reviews, coordinate on features in #feat- channels, or join special interest groups in #sig- channels.

Just a reminder: PRs would not trigger full CI run by default. Instead, it would only run fastcheck CI which starts running only a small and essential subset of CI tests to quickly catch errors. You can run other CI tests on top of those by going to your fastcheck build on Buildkite UI (linked in the PR checks section) and unblock them. If you do not have permission to unblock, ping simon-mo or khluu to add you in our Buildkite org.

Once the PR is approved and ready to go, your PR reviewer(s) can run CI to test the changes comprehensively before merging.

To run CI, PR reviewers can either: Add ready label to the PR or enable auto-merge.

How are update_weightand check_weights_changed supposed to be used?

update_weight is called externally, by collective_rpc("update_weight")

any suggestion to make it better? the problem is, the worker class is dynamically determined based on v1 or v0.

Do you think we'd be able to simplify this once we move off of V0 completely?

I don't think so, this is not just for v0/v1, but also for different platforms. for example, if an rlhf framework wants to support both cuda and rocm, they can use a similar mixin class for both, without knowing what is the underlying worker class.

What about calling this mixin instead of adapter?

What about calling this mixin instead of adapter?

thanks for the suggestion. mixin seems not very intuitive. How about worker_parent_cls ? the class provided will be a parent class of the underlying worker.

Based on my understanding this is exactly what a mixin is, adding a parent class with the purpose of injecting functionality into some other class. And that's essentially what's being done here?

oh i just thought "mixin" is not a common word, and "parent" is easier for people to understand.

I think it's a fairly common pattern: https://realpython.com/inheritance-composition-python/#mixing-features-with-mixin-classes

Thanks @youkaichao!

I just had another idea that "extension" could be another good option for the name. But no need to change again unless you also like that better...

I agree extension would be a better option. let's use extension then. this is a user-facing argument, and being user-friendly is important.
