Describe the issue
UTM 4.2.4(beta) won't display characters on ChromiumBrowser, VScode when GPU acceleration is enabled (ANGLE metal backened).
Besides, still chances are that Ubuntu 20.04 will freeze randomly(screen display freezes, no response to keyboard, sometimes can move the mouse, but sometimes not) when selecting display cards with "GPU supported". Do not know this issue belongs to Ubuntu itself of UTM GPU accleration.

Configuration (required)

  • UTM Version: V4.2.4
  • OS Version: Ubuntu 20.04.5
  • Device Model: ipadpro 2021 M1 256GB
  • Is it jailbroken (name jailbreak used)? No
  • How did you install UTM? TrollStore

Please check your settings to see what rendering backend is selected. If it is not "Default", can you try setting it to Default?

Tried "Default" and "ANGLE OpenGL", both let UTM crashed soon after log in to the system.

Did you try ANGLE Metal as well?

Yes, I used angle(metal) first, UTM won’t crash but there’s a display problem for chromium, and the system could freeze after some time( as described above). Then I tried Default and OpenGL, but UTM crashed quickly even before I can open an application.

Does the OpenGL/Default issues happen for you in 4.1.x? I know the Metal issues are new to 4.2.4, but was OpenGL broken before as well?

Sorry, I only used metal for v4.1.x, and everything works fine except for system freezing problem. Oh,plus, the screen may flash sometime(sudden black screen and recovered within 0.5 second),maybe it's due to too high resolution I set for VM(same reso as ipadpro itself).

Can you test v4.1.6 with OpenGL just to see if the issues are new or existing?

By the way, I believe the crash is due to OpenGL backend using more memory. You can try decreasing the amount of memory to the VM and see if that helps (other way is to lower the resolution).

For v4.1.6, both Default and OpenGL woluld crash like v4.2.4. Indeed, when using ANGLE OpenGL, before crash, I'll get the UTM message for "running in low memory" while Default will crash directly(I set 2GB and 4GB ram, both crash).
Thanks for this new build, characters now can display normally!!
Plus, I found that the system is less likely to freeze when I terminate other iOS apps manually and only run UTM, but I still wonder whether it's related to GPU acceleration and can be solved.
