instead of subclassing and extending the phosphor datagrid, https://github.com/phosphorjs/phosphor/tree/master/packages/datagrid, some of the functionality could be done upstream.
which features make sense?

I think you mean @phosphor/datagrid? https://github.com/phosphorjs/phosphor/tree/master/packages/datagrid

The grid panel is an old stale repo that I need to remove.
