A prerelease is available for v13. The release is tagged as next and can be installed with:

npm install commander@next

The big changes are:

stricter
- end-user error for excess command arguments (Disallow excess arguments #2223)
- author error for invalid option flags (Throw for unsupported option setup #2270)
support for adding color to the help (Support color ansi code sequences in custom help #2251)
