Feature: Option to disable or change column icon #3181

Description

@martinfojtik

Currently, there is an icon on the left side next to a column title. I have a few issues with that:

  • For new users, it is not obvious what the meaning of the icon is. If the user has never edited a field, it's hard for them to guess what the icon means. For example, a new user will not know the meaning of an icon that resembles the letter "A".
  • The same icon can be repeated multiple times in a table. It feels like visual spam. I don't see much value in having an icon there. (Excel also does not have icons in its title)
  • Minimal width of column is something around 100px, and the icon takes 20px of that, even short text is trimmed on the right side. I prefer the space to be used for text and to see more of the title's lettering. (In the attached image below, you can see the letter "L" in the first column.)

I see a few possible ways to make it better:

  • In table setting, have the option to turn off all icons in headers
  • In a field edit modal, have the option to turn off the icon for the column header
  • or have a way to set a custom icon for column title, similarly to how it is done for base title

Although I previously said I do not see the value of keeping current icons in the header, I would like the option to set a custom icon or turn off the icon for the column title.
