pdump write works. pdump load gives error

Running Debian 10 amd64

Backing up a character successfully creates the file, and the content looks good. Importing that character gives an error stating "Dump file has broken data"

I expected the character to be imported properly, on a new account with the new name.

Pick a character. use the following command:
pdump write new_character.sql $charname
then:
pdump load new_character.sql $another_account $newname
