If one would be to implement this feature for sharedrop, at which files in the project should look at @szimek ? I would like to give it a go...

Wow this was requested long ago. I'm surprised no one has implemented this simple but effective feature.

If anyone can come up with a good UI/UX for this for both desktop and mobile, I'll try to find some time to implement it.

I think on desktop is as easy as using a hover effect, which will show an input text.
Instead, on mobile, an icon on the side of the user's name would be a clean solution.

I think this feature is the only thing missing in ShareDrop. Snapdrop had it since day one, and to be honest, I hate Snapdrop.

@Cohvir Ha, I only tried Snapdrop when it came out and had no idea it supports sending messages. The UX is actually pretty nice, so I might try to implement something similar.

BTW. I'm curious - why do you hate Snapdrop?

To be honest, I hate it because in every single case I was in need of transferring any file it wouldn’t work. I couldn’t find myself on the same network.
But I’m glad I moved on and found ShareDrop as a “substitute” to Snapdrop. But at the end I understood ShareDrop was the main character since the start.

Maybe the luck of Snapdrop is to have a better google ranking (or used to have).

IMHO, implementing text sending / chat that would be feature creep and a bad idea. You need to have a way to exchange room info first anyway, why not continue using that channel for text exchanges?

Because the point is not to make ShareDrop an alternative to WhatsApp and happily chat. Instead sharing a basic URL from your mobile device to your PC on the same network is a need for a large pool of users.

I use ShareDrop almost exclusively to send files between devices that I own. In that case, I'm not exchanging channel info with anyone. This is my typical user story:

  1. Open ShareDrop.io on my desktop browser in order to receive a file
  2. Tap the + icon in the upper right to display a QR code
  3. Scan the QR code with my phone to join the same room
  4. Send file from phone to desktop

It would be great to be able to send short text or URLs in step 4! As mentioned previously, SnapDrop.net accomplishes this with a long-press gesture on mobile. I personally prefer ShareDrop because it is more reliable, but will sometimes fall back to SnapDrop when I need to share bits of text.

Yes, share file and message between Android with Linux always a pain.

Especially in those countries which have firewall. telegram or whatapps all not works.

I have to start a web server use dufs, but this bascially do same things with sharedrop, but for message, i have to install a IM (if there one available for linux), we really need this feature, thank you!
