Rain puddles work great. However, when I use a high render distance, they tank performance a bit.
If the reflections had a range to render (say 16 chunks, or the shadow distance maybe) that could improve the frame rate, and I hope without looking too bad.
Alternatively, you could maybe drop the quality of reflections depending on the distance from the player? I don't know.
