Migration of CoCalc Infrastructure to Kubernetes

Kubernetes is open source software for deploying, managing, and scaling containerized applications.

1. Purpose for the Upgrade

The CoCalc team sees upgrading our infrastructure to Kubernetes as essential to keeping CoCalc secure, scalable, resilient, and cost-effective. This upgrade will allow us to add features, manage CoCalc capacity, and introduce products that were simply not feasible under the old infrastructure.

2. What to Expect

when

  • The upgrade is scheduled for middle of the day Pacific time (UTC-7), August 25.
  • Additional details will be posted here.

system changes

  • Ubuntu version

  • Linux user name and home directory

  • memory and CPU project upgrades

    • you will need to restart your project when changing these options
  • new cocalc ssh host key(s)

new features

  • preserving CoCalc sessions when browser is refreshed; named sessions

  • simplified ssh public key management; single ssh key can be used to access to all your sessions

  • Julia updated

  • Sage 8.0 now the default
