Send/Receive in background

Will it ever be able to send and receive in the iOS background? I've tried setting on some background modes and even a background identifier, but that does not seem to work.

It works fine with Audio related applications (e.g. my midimittr application) - but it requires you to loop a WAV/MP3 to keep the AVAudioSession up and thus keep the app alive in background.
