# Touring tidyverse
## tidy data + tidyr
### Misha Balyasin

# tidyverse
> The tidyverse is an __opinionated__ collection of R packages designed for data science. All packages share an underlying design philosophy, grammar, and data structures.
All things tidyverse: https://www.tidyverse.org/
---
# Tidy manifesto1
1. Reuse existing data structures.
--
2. Compose simple functions with the pipe.
- Strive to keep functions as simple as possible.
- Avoid mixing side-effects with transformations.
- Function names should be verbs.
--
3. Embrace R typical functional programming.
- Immutable objects and copy-on-modify semantics.
- The generic functions provided by S3 and S4.
- Tools that abstract over for-loops.
--
4. Design for humans.
- Invest time in naming your functions.
- Favour explicit, lengthy names, over short, implicit, names.
- Think about how autocomplete can also make an API that’s easy to write.

# Tidy data
1. Each variable forms a column.
2. Each observation forms a row.
3. Each type of observational unit forms a table.
This is Codd's 3rd normal form.

# tidyr
1. tidyr replaces reshape2 (2010-2014) and reshape (2005-2010).
2. Current version - 0.8.3.9000 (dev version!).
3. https://github.com/tidyverse/tidyr
4. __Hadley Wickham__ and Lionel Henry are two main contributors.
