Blender 2.8 Support
Current Status: (September 7th, 2022)
- Windows: Fully supported in Blender 2.81 and later, including 2.9+
- Linux: Fully supported in Blender 2.81 and later, including 2.9+
-
MacOS: Fully supported in Blender 2.83 and later, including 2.9+
- Due to a Blender bug in versions 2.80, 2.81, and 2.82, these versions cannot be supported on MacOS
- Not fully supported in Blender 2.80
Blender 2.80 is not fully supported and will never be fully supported due to severe bugs present in Blender 2.80. The Blender developers have fixed these bugs in Blender 2.81. We recommend using FLIP Fluids with Blender 2.81 or higher.
The following topics will detail the known issues in Blender 2.80
The FLIP Fluids addon and simulator will correctly install and run in Blender 2.80, but you may run into issues. These are the current known issues in Blender 2.80.
A bug in Blender 2.80 will cause Cycles/EEVEE crashes for most users. This bug has been reported to the developers here: T60094. This bug has been confirmed and set as a high priority. The developers stated that they will fix all high priority bugs before the release of Blender 2.80, but these issues have not yet been fixed.
- A possible workaround for this bug is to lock the interface during render (Blender > Render > Lock Interface). This workaround does not work for all FLIP Fluids users, unfortunately.
- The best known workaround is to render from the command line. This does not work for all FLIP Fluids users, but has a high rate of success. See this documentation for How to Render from the Command Line.
Here is a timeline of the progress of this bug:
- January 3rd 2019 - I reported this bug on the Blender issue tracker here.
- January 25th 2019 - The bug was confirmed and set to a medium priority. Source.
- March 18th 2019 - The bug was raised to high priority after multiple reports in commonly used addons (FLIP Fluids and Animation Nodes). Source.
- April 15th 2019 - According to the Blender Developer Meeting notes, Blender 2.80 will see a release in July and fixing all bugs listed as high priority is a requirement for release.
- July 30th 2019 - Blender 2.80 has been released and this bug has not yet been fixed.
- August 1st 2019 - A Blender developer has responded that this issue can and will be fixed. Source.
- September 11th 2019 - This issue has been marked as fixed on the Blender issue tracker! We will focus our time testing and confirming the fix. We will need to make some changes to the addon. Detailed progress on this task will be posted in this thread.
- September 26th 2019 - Full support for Blender 2.81 including crash fixes has been added in experimental FLIP Fluids v9.0.6.1. These fixes will shortly be added to a stable FLIP Fluids release after public testing.
- October 7th 2019 - After extensive testing, we can confirm the fixes and will include the fixes in the next stable FLIP Fluids release (v1.0.6 available October 10th).
- October 8th 2019 - FLIP Fluids version 1.0.6 is now available on the Blender Market.
A bug in Blender 2.80 will make it not possible to export a FLIP Fluids simulation to Alembic. This bug has been reported to the developers here: T65816
A bug in Blender 2.80 may cause crashes when attempting to export a FLIP Fluids simulation to Alembic. This bug has been reported to the developers here: : T67627
These bugs have been fixed in Blender 2.81 and the fixes are available in the latest stable release of FLIP Fluids.
