I'm not sure where to direct this, greetd or you, sorry about that.

Turning off and on the screen and exiting river results in:
info(wlroots): [libseat] [libseat/backend/seatd.c:70] Could not connect to socket /run/seatd.sock: No such file or directory
info(wlroots): [libseat] [libseat/seat.c:77] Backend 'sead' failed to open seat, skipping.

what causes this?

I haven't seen this issue previously, so I'm not sure. Where do you see these errors? That might help to diagnose this issue.

Try the following out:

  1. Swap ReGreet for another greetd greeter, like gtkgreet. If the issue goes away, it's a ReGreet bug.
  2. Swap greetd for another login manager, like LightDM (it actually works for launching Wayland desktops, even though it itself uses X11). If the issue goes away, it's a greetd bug.
  3. Swap River for another DE/WM, like Sway. If the issue goes away, it's a River bug.
  4. ???

If it's a ReGreet bug, then please post the logs here, along with your system info (like ReGreet version, distro, WM used for running ReGreet, number of monitors, login method (password-entry, fingerprint, etc.), etc.).
