QGIS Expressions for Advanced Spatial Analysis

Time: 27 November 2020 10h00 UTC (click this link to find out the time in your local time zone), duration 2 hours.

Duration: 2 hours

Venue: Watch the live YouTube stream here https://youtu.be/IraiAF4s5Tg (it will be recorded so you can also watch afterwards at the same URL).

Presenter: Ujaval Gandhi

Host: Tim Sutton

We are going to deep dive into some more advanced topics so that you can level up your QGIS skills! QGIS comes with a powerful expression engine that enables a range of advanced capabilities. In this talk, Ujaval will show how to use built-in QGIS functions such as aggregate(), array_foreach() and eval() to automate spatial analysis with just expressions - no Python code or special plugins required!

We will take an example application of applying Spatial Homogeneity Test on rainfall data. This is a complex test used in hydrological applications that requires one to find neighboring stations using a set of spatial rules and then apply a series of statistical tests to determine if the measurement is valid. He will show how to implement this test using QGIS expression and automate the workflow using Processing Modeler. Ujaval will also share QGIS pro-tips and show some demos of lesser-known features.

Ujaval Gandhi is a veteran QGIS user, trainer and blogger. Ujaval got his Masters in Geospatial Information Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. He joined Google Inc. in 2005 as one of the early employees of the mapping group. He spent 15 years working on various projects at Google including leading Google's GIS teams in India. He started his company Spatial Thoughts in 2019 and now offers a wide range of training programs to address the learning needs of geospatial professionals.

Note that the stream may drop for a few minutes at around the 1h30 mark. Stick around and we will bring it up again ASAP.

QGIS User Group session

Information sharing about the different national user groups and their approaches.

  • How to communicate with the users? Email, chat, which software?
  • What kind of events have taken place, and which were successful (and which not)?
  • How to deal with corona now? Any nice suggestions or solutions for events?
  • Should user groups all be set up (or pushed) in some similar format? Or should they all be free and diverse according to the local cultures, etcetera.

Time: 14h00 UTC

Duration: 1 hour

Please add more virtual meetup initiatives below!

Event promotion message:

Dear Users of our beloved QGIS Project

Friday November 27 is QGISOpenDay! What is QGISOpenDay, you may be wondering to yourself? It is an initiative to replace the wonderful community meetups we used to hold every six months when times were different. Like our in-person meetings, the event is organised on a principle of self-organisation and community participation.

XXX (world renowned QGIS expert) and I will be hosting a 2 hour AMA (ask me anything) session on Friday morning WET. You can find out more about it here:

https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/wiki/QHF-November-2020

The session will be recorded so if you can't watch live, you can still feel free to submit your QGIS brain teasers and burning questions for Giovanni to answer.

We really encourage others to follow our initiative, using the above wiki page to organise your plans (just add a section below our AMA one). You can host virtual meetups in the Jitsi room, plan your next steps to take QGIS further down the road to world domination and much much more. We encourage language and region-specific huddles, documentation improvement sessions, bug fixing, making beautiful maps, and working together to do amazing things with QGIS.

Participants are kindly reminded to please read and observe our QGIS Code of Conduct and Diversity Statement to make these events a great experience for everyone!

We look forward to seeing you there!
