branch: nativeSound

This branch was created when I was trying out native sound as a solution for some timing problems described in #27. That issue has the details, but in summary, the experiment didn't yield a significantly better outcome, so I didn't commit it to the master branch. I'd like to keep it around for a while in case I have to revisit it. If you're reading this and the current date is past Oct 31 2023, and there are no updates below, the branch can be deleted and this issue closed.
