Is remapping prefix to non latin1 or utf8 character possible

Hello,
Is is possible to set prefix to a non latin 1/utf8 character? I googled this issue and found very old replies in stackoverflow from 2012 etc, stating that not possible. I am asking here to reach a definitive answer for anyone needing this. If possible, how can I do it.

Did you try it? It works for me. For example I set the prefix to U+03b1 and it seems to work fine. From my ~/.tmux.conf:

set-option -g prefix α
unbind C-b
bind α send-prefix

I tried before asking.

I tried using the character ç as follows which is not recognized.

unbind C-b
set-option -g prefix C-ç
bind-key C-ç send-prefix

Python console gives 0xe7 for ç as follows. I tried using it as C-0xe7, it did not work as well

In [1]: hex(ord('ç'))
Out[1]: '0xe7'

No, you tried using Ctrl-ç. For that character to with with a Ctrl modifier requires your terminal and Tmux to support extended modifiers. Historically the Ctrl modifier only worked with a subset of the ASCII characters. See the Tmux extended-keys option.

P.S., If you remove the C- (Ctrl) modifier you'll find that pressing your ç key will act as the Tmux prefix. Whether you get it to work with a Ctrl modifier depends on your terminal and may or may not work as expected. Extended keys is a relatively new feature and thus doesn't always work in every terminal with every program.

Thank you indeed. Yes if used without Ctrl modifier, it works. However I need a modifier since I need to type that letter often as literal.

I have looked at extended characters, and I am truely lost.

I am using alacritty as terminal and based on “Enable Special Keyboard Combinations in Alacritty / Kitty for Neovim - YouTube.” , [Alacritty] Extended Keys for Neovim 0.7
and “Fix Terminals - Please.” I have understood that I need to something for alacritty as well since I am using neovim heavily.

I read the tmux wiki extended keys . I am not sure if I can use non latin1 unicode character with alacritty. I tried putting some unicode key mapping to alacritty configuration file, I get errors. I do know if alacritty supports it at all. Thank you again. I will look more into it. I have to ask these at alacritty discussion, I guess.
