Libretro hates computer emulation, so it's unlikely to work well there.

I'm not begging for the ROM. I do actually have the latest version. But MAME is searching for a different one. It may be a bug.

If it helps, emulators like CSpect or ZEsarUX (the latter is FOSS on github) do load and run .nex files from commandline.

Maybe their authors could shed a light on how they achieved it?

As a workaround, if the .nex file could be loaded from the commandline not in the actual sdcard hardware but in a "virtual" sdcard in logic, the process of launching could be done by setting a custom ini file for the tbblue?

I'm tried to explain you the problem. We can't load nex if we don't have rom and we don't know the state user prefers: refresh rate, ports opened, parentals allowed - everything you configure on the boot screen. MAME doesn't have access to this rom until it's loaded from sdcard - similar as a real hw.
The other emulators caring some rom (which one? which version? nextzxos one probably), they set config based on authors preferences, not what you picked.

What's the problem to copy nex to the image and run it from there?

None, actually. I'm trying to find a way to automate this.

So, provided the .nex file is added to an .img file, something like this could be run ...

mame tbblue -hard1 path/to/nextzxos.img -hard2 path/to/nextfileinimg.img

?

Use hdfmonkey, you'll be able to copy your file to the image with a single command. You can even automate it more if add the file to nextzxos autoexec after it copied.
