Snippets no longer working

It seems that as of the most recent update on my system (version 0.22.3 on Ubuntu 22.04.3) the snippets are no longer appearing in the popup window. The snippet plugin appears to be turned on, but the snippet files appear as red text in the snippets window:

which I don't remember from before. I have tried a clean config directory and it did not fix the problem. Here are the relevant settings from albert.conf:

[snippets]
enabled=true
global_handler_enabled=true

the snippet files now have to have a txt extension, such that qt can open an appropriate editor.
