This seems to be possible with vector tiles by a provider like nextzen.org and the tangram mapping engine. In general tangram seems to be more powerful than leaflet. Will be looking at this in consideration with all the other new features to be implemented.

Tangram support has been added. But still gotta figure out local language support. Where do the translations come from and how to load it into the vector layers.
