i am certain that this issue doesnt belong in this repo, but i didnt find any website repo (any other repo for that matter), so, posting here.

Summary

Ability to open in vscodium, an extension's page directly from its link

Steps to try

  1. To open an extension in VSCodium, whose id/link is available: https://open-vsx.org/extension/darkriszty/markdown-table-prettify
  2. Currently there's no option (by default) other than manually searching for that extension in the Codium's UI

Details:

  • It would be really nice if the open-vsx site has some mechanism to trigger "Open in VSCodium" behaviour which will enable to directly open it in codium when extension is shared as id or link.
  • The current requirement of manually searching:
    • requires mental effort
    • is time consuming
    • is VERRY inefficient
    • removes any chance for semi-automation
  • i GUESS this page Using-Open-VSX-in-VS-Code says smth on that matter, but havent tried yet.
But it should be enabled by default.

Rough mockup:

References:

  • found in other sites, including for example: the ms-vsmarket site, or telegram site.
  • MS-vsMarket:
    open in VS Code vivaldi_8o5kd0soPu

You should open an issue here instead: https://github.com/eclipse/openvsx Although I am not sure where we should stop then, VSCodium is not a single consumer of Open VSX, neither primary. Why should it be special? Should we allow any fork of VS Code, i.e. Gitpod, openvscode-server, code-sever, any Theia based product?

VSCodium is not a single consumer of Open VSX, neither primary

  • i wasnt aware of that. hmm, that's really a problem then ... wait, it's still not a problem, i got a solution 😅
  • see in the above video which i attached in the telegram's section, it shows 2 apps as option @ 0:07
  • so, how about all open-vsx defines some standard way and all the "consumers" who already support open-vsx implements that standard way in their application
  • the wording of the suggested button will change to something like "Install in a client"

Forks of VS Code: VS Codium, gitpod, openvscode-server, code-server
Theia based product

Do the clients u mentioned wait, yeah, doesnt matter if open-vsx is their only supported market or not, they can implement support for all other markets too if any.
