Fonts with a family name that is too long can not be selected on MS-WORD.
The cause is that Name ID 1 is not unique within 31 characters.
For example, typefaces that shorten "Condensed" to "Cond" etc. can be used without problems with MS-WORD.
My ideal is that all font's NameID 1 fits within 31 characters.
If font name ID 1 is 32 characters or more, even if the font can be used, it is not displayed correctly.
The following is a list of all 359 fonts that can not be used.
This was fixed with the Google page Noto-hinted zip file at ver 2.000, ttfautohint (v1.7) by condensing Condensed to Cond, ExtraLight to ExtLt, etc. This practice should be practised by providing another family of fonts that has shortened name in this repo as the Google Noto page is not updated.
@marekjez86
Thank you for fixing the TTF name in the distribution page.
My thoughts on this problem are the following:
There are some strange adjustments applied to the Family name in get-noto.
For example, “UI” is deleted in NotoSansSinhalaUI. Therefore, the both Regular and UI font families have the same Family name.
I was not sure how to trace or report the above issue.
Considering the points above, it would be ideal if the font names of the source files, the TTF and OTF files after build are the same.
I thought it would be best if it is as the following:
The fonts name is adjusted at the googlefonts/noto-source stage.
The font name is applied to the fonts in the GitHub repository (googlefonts/noto-fonts).
If the name table of the TTF and OTF files after the build, need to be directly adjusted, I wish if it can be handled in the following process.
Make the Script that needs the name table to be updated, to be available to the public in Noto Project.
