Before HyperCard Bill Atkinson wrote Rolodex-like QuickFile in 1985. It supported organization of notes on sequential cards:

Asked in 1987 about where Atkinson got the idea for HyperCard

Actually, HyperCard is a descendant of two ideas. One was the
give-away Rolodex program that I wrote just to keep track of my own
journal articles. [the other was fast searching]
