Courses and forms for new experimental staff and students

All new starters should receive a copy of the Brain Sciences CoP, Floor Local Rules and Building Handbook. They should read all relevant Risk Assessments and SOP’s. Also new starters are to obtain the following mandatory inductions/courses:

  • Day one Safety induction with Laboratory Manager (first day)- require this for obtaining the access card Day 1 Induction Form

  • General lab induction- this is done in the first week with Laboratory Manager

  • Training on specific lab equipment (safety cabinets, Cryostat, centrifuges) these must be recorded.

  • Tissue Culture Room Induction – To be completed before using the tissue culture rooms

  • All staff will get an automatic email for doing MOST (Month One Safety Training). Post graduate students will need to be sent the link to complete this too. MOST has to be done within the first month of joining and the Lab Manager requires the confirmatory email of passing this course. MOST

  • Complete other relevant training courses as outlined in the training matrix Training Matrix

  • All staff and post graduate students to do RAFT completed within three months of joining (online, self-enrolment) Risk Assessment Foundation Training - RAFT

  • Complete the e-learning Fire Safety and Awareness Training Fire Safety Course

  • All staff and students new to lab work at Imperial need to enrol in the Laboratory Safety- foundation training course: Laboratory Safety - Foundation Training

Staff/students planning to work on research projects involving work with animals, human tissue or blood samples, hazard group 2 or 3 pathogens and hazard group 2 or 3 genetically modified organisms.

  • Complete the biological agents (health surveillance) form and send it to occupational health before starting any work with unscreened blood and/or tissue. Health Surveillance

  • If access outside of “normal working hours” is required, then a lone working risk assessment (see Lab Manager for template) must be completed and apply for consent to work via the on-line application form. Lone working consent application form

  • The approval chain is: Line manager, Lab Manager, Faculty Safety Advisor. Eg: Yu Ye, Megan Winterbotham, Diane Thomason.

Researchers on staff or PhD positions, who will be doing experimental work, should request access to the procurement system:

Note: Undergraduate students must not lone work.

MRes students may only lone work with their supervisor present.
