MPV 0.41.0 triggers switch to HDR for SDR content in fullscreen

After upgrading to MPV 0.41.0 from 0.40.0 switching to fullscreen (f) causes my monitor to switch to HDR mode when playing SDR content. The very first time this happened a message appeared in the top right warning about the mismatch. As far as I know bt.709 is SDR only, and when running mpv --target-colorspace-hint-mode=source --target-colorspace-hint=yes the switch to HDR mode in fullscreen does not occur.

It seems like a bug, but despite copying my distro's compile options the version of mpv I build doesn't doesn't reproduce this issue in the distro package version so I am unable to do a bisect to find what changed and determine if the issue really is mpv.

Is anyone else having this issue with 0.41.0? Also ideas for what might be missing in my local build to reproduce the issue would be appreciated.

Report proper bug report. How can we help if we don;t even know what OS are you using?

I think I experience the same: When mpv is not in fullscreen the colors are a bit oversaturated and when I switch to fullscreen the colors become very desaturated. Using these flags: --target-colorspace-hint-mode=source --target-colorspace-hint=yes solves the issue.

Generally it's your compositor job to decide whether to output HDR signal to your TV. mpv will output PQ (HDR) if compositors requests it as preferred transfer or uses non-standard luminance levels.

Or don't send any luminance values at all, which is actually a protocol violation but Gnome and Hyprland do it

Yes, this falls into "non-standard" luminance. mpv could do better here and detect this case, but we can just wait for them to fix it on their end.

Yeah I'm on Hyprland, so maybe it's a problem there

i had some weird issue with colours changing when switching to fullscreen after the upgrade

solved it by downloading my monitor ICM colour profile and applying it using mpv.conf; ICC and ICM files should both work i'm guessing

The commit that causes this change is ae211f7 (#17149). Based on the messages in this discussion and that I am also using Hyprland it seems likely to be something mpv could do better but not actually an mpv issue.

Closing this discussion in favor of the the issue (#17204) that now exists for this problem.

Hyprland has broken color management implementation, so you should disable it. Or disable using it in mpv, one of the two. mpv shouldn't need to do better here because it's adhering to the wayland specification
