Command not found 'docker-php-ext-install' from gitlab ci

I am running a gitlab ci script which includes the docker-php-ext-install command, however; the command fails from the gitlab ci and also from the Ubuntu VM with the returned error:

ubuntu:~$ docker-php-ext-install soap
docker-php-ext-install: command not found

This is my gitlab ci script.. ..is there anything I could be missing?

The php:5.6 docker image doesn't come with the install-php-extensions script.

Hi. I saw that and followed the instructions...

and it seemed to build successfully:

This is what happens if I try to run the command directly from the VM:

I also notice that no container is being created by my gitlab ci when I perform a docker ps -a:

Meaning I believe the command is still be executed from the Ubuntu shell despite the being called to run from php5:6.

When I try to run the container locally, it exits immediately as well...

sudo docker build -t php:5.6 /home/ubuntu/

I'd use different tag, since it's the same as the official one, maybe something like

sudo docker build -t my:php-5.6 /home/ubuntu/

docker run php:5.6-cli exits immediately because by default the container runs the PHP interpreter in an interactive mode, but since you don't tell docker to Armitage the console, you see nothing.

So, I'd write docker --rm -it run php:5.6-cli bash

docker --rm -it fails with this output:

unknown shorthand flag: 'r' in -rm

Also wondering, am I executing the docker-php-ext-install properly in my gitlab ci file? It seems as though all my commands are being deployed directly to the Ubuntu VM and not the php image.

It's --rm, not -rm

And of course you have to fetch the docker-php-ext-install script inside the same container where you'll use it.

Hi, thanks for the help up to this point. I am still running into problems executing this command:

~$ sudo docker --rm -it run php:5.6-cli bash

Okay I figured it out.. ..it is:

sudo docker run --rm -it php:5.6-cli bash

The docker-php-ext-install-soap command works as intended inside of this environment.. ..this leads me to believe that Gitlab is either not running the command in the correct environment or is not inside of php.. ..After I run my gitlab CI script and perform a docker ps -a I notice that there are no containers that have exited within a recent period of time which leads me to believe that gitlab is not spinning up a container for this process. How should I direct gitlab over the gitlab ci to properly spin a container using the image I just created?

That's a good question for a gitlab forum...

PS: please remark that the --rm flag tells docker do delete the container once you are done using it (that is, since you start a bash session, when you exit from bash)
