Getting started developing from source

Hi all - I'm working to build and dev on VSCode right now and understanding the working components of all the code. It's a lot to take in so was wondering if anyone has pointers on where to start for incremental building. I have read the docs and can build - however I want to do something basic like get rid of the source control view on the left hand side (which i see under the workspaces/contrib folder) but don't know how to get rid of it without breaking everything. Any tips?
