No new version since months... Did something happen? Main developers lost interest? Did Microsoft stop the project? I had great hopes for this editor but now I am concerned that I have to look for alternatives again.

There has been a steady trickle of changes since the last release, and @lhecker is actively working on a lightweight syntax highlighting engine for this very editor. In the meantime, he also had to work on getting it checked in to Windows (so that it is installed by default) and fix some bugs for Windows Terminal (the other project of which he is a maintainer.)

But more to your point:

Is there something Edit does not do properly today such that you'd be forced to abandon it if it didn't do that thing? Or is this somewhat of a tongue-in-cheek threat that you'll leave? 🙂

Good to hear that highlighting is worked on. This is actually one of the two things I'm dearly missing from other editors.

The other feature I miss is a working integration with the clipboard of Xorg/Wayland. There was already on open issue for it but I can't find it anymore. Hope it wasn't closed as won't-fix. When I remember correctly one possible plan was to first implement a configuration file so the behavior of msedit can be customized. And then allow users to configure helper tools like xclip to connect msedit clipboard to the system clipboard. That's how I used mcedit before I switched to msedit.

Personally I would also prefer if I could disable line numbering and the scrollbar which currently interfere with the terminals own text selection and copy/paste. I think there also was an open issue for it already which was also waiting for a user-configuration system in msedit.
