Follows on from #12421.

Suggest commit-by-commit review.

Most of these were trivial; two were not.

  • In d960589 the script's dependency injection was fighting the type system.
  • There was simply a lot to do in c8139e0.

This one might be contraversial. `request_registration` has three
dependency-injection arguments used for testing. I'm removing the
injection of the `requests` module and using `unitest.mock.patch` in the
test cases instead.

Doing `reveal_type(requests)` and `reveal_type(requests.get)` before the
change:

This was by far the most painful. I'm happy to break this up into
smaller pieces for review if it's not managable as-is.
Scripts is typed.

If you'd like you can patch the entire class and a mock will get passed into each test method IIRC.

Good to know! I think I default to applying patches to as small a scope as possible, but I can see that it'd save a lot of boilerplate.

I'm pretty sure the sytest failure is a flake. Cross-referencing: #12419.

I've seen a couple of spots where we use Tuple with no parameters, is that due to this code being abstract or something else?

Laziness on my part. Tuple with no parameters is shorthand for Tuple[Any, ...], i.e. a variadic tuple with no constraints on its elements' types. I'm using these in functions which work across multiple tables, so there's not an easy way to know the specific kind of tuple to expect.

It might be possible to do something better with sqlalchemy. There is a mypy plugin for use with sqlalchemy ORM, which I don't think we're interested in using for now. My reading of sqlalchemy/sqlalchemy#6102 (comment) suggests that it'd be possible in principle to have typechecking that works on sqlachemy Core machinery; but that would need typechecker support for variadic generics. I'm not fully sure how that fits into sqlalchemy's 1.4->2.0 transition.

But anyway, the above is aspirational; I don't see us changing our database machinery any time soon.

If your deployment uses a dedicated worker for application service traffic, **it must be stopped** when the database is upgraded (which normally happens when the main process is upgraded), to ensure the change is made safely without any risk of reusing transaction IDs.
