the room list on places like matrix.org is full of ghost towns. perhaps /publicRooms should tell you when there was last a msg in a room, so clients can filter them out.

It's deceiving that rooms with thousands of listed users can be wholly dead. I sometimes notice after asking a question that there's nobody listening.

It's not clear to me what a "dead room" is. One that's been tombstoned?

sounds like: the client should provide a chosen cutoff date for last activity/message in the room
