I would think that just means "automatically, with some constraints" though I'm not sure what, if any, constraints are needed. Maybe a certain amount of time as a grace period?

Have renamed and reopened this bug, as it is a HORRIBLE user experience that:

  • You create a room, give it an alias
  • You decide to recreate it for some reason (e.g. having accidentally shared admin with someone you no longer want to have admin)
  • You get everyone to leave the room
  • You create a new room
  • You discover there is literally no way to reclaim the original alias.

The easiest solution would be for synapse to delete aliases of rooms on its server where it can see that everyone has left the room.

element-hq/element-web#3194 has a lot more detail on this from the client's perspective.
