Could we have a method for TreeSE objects that is analogous to SEtools::mergeSEs function (see here)? The SEtools::mergeSEs does merge TreeSE objects as well but it returns SE, which is problematic.
The cbind works manually to combine two objects but with longer lists it would be easier to have a wrapper that takes care of the merging.

@antagomir already knows since he is one of the developers of mia, but mia::mergeSEs() merges TreeSE objects (just in case if someone bumps into this). https://microbiome.github.io/mia/
This is generic functionality on TreeSummarizedExperiment objects, so this pkg might be a more natural home for it than mia (which focuses more on downstream analysis tools). The mia functionality can be transferred if this feels like a good solution.
