The economy took a hit from the global recession and real GDP contracted by 3.5% in 2009. The economy began a slow recovery in 2010 on the back of improved export and remittances figures. Remittances accounted for 16% of GDP in 2009, and about a third of all households receive these transfers. In 2006 El Salvador was the first country to ratify the Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR), which has bolstered the export of processed foods, sugar, and ethanol, and supported investment in the apparel sector amid increased Asian competition and the expiration of the Multi-Fiber Agreement in 2005. El Salvador has promoted an open trade and investment environment, and has embarked on a wave of privatizations extending to telecom, electricity distribution, banking, and pension funds. In late 2006, the government and the Millennium Challenge Corporation signed a five-year, $461 million compact to stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty in the country's northern region, the primary conflict zone during the civil war, through investments in education, public services, enterprise development, and transportation infrastructure. With the adoption of the US dollar as its currency in 2001, El Salvador lost control over monetary policy. Any counter-cyclical policy response to the downturn must be through fiscal policy, which is constrained by legislative requirements for a two-thirds majority to approve any international financing, and by already high levels of debt.","GDP (purchasing power parity)":{"GDP (purchasing power parity)":{"usd":43570000000},"country comparison to the world":""},"GDP (official exchange rate)":{"usd":21700000000},"GDP - real growth rate":{"quantity":0.7,"unit":"%"},"GDP - per capita (PPP)":{"GDP - per capita (PPP)":{"usd":null},"country comparison to the world":""},"GDP - composition by sector":{"agriculture":{"quantity":11,"unit":"%"},"industry":{"quantity":29.1,"unit":"%"},"services":{"quantity":59.9,"unit":"%"}},"Labor force":2940000,"Labor force - by occupation":{"agriculture":{"quantity":19,"unit":"%"},"industry":{"quantity":23,"unit":"%"},"services":{"quantity":58,"unit":"%"}},"Unemployment rate":{"Unemployment rate":{"quantity":7,"unit":"%"},"country comparison to the world":""},"Population below poverty line":{"quantity":37.8,"unit":"%"},"Household income or consumption by percentage share":{"lowest 10%":{"quantity":1,"unit":"%"},"highest 10%":{"quantity":37,"unit":"%"}},"Distribution of family income - Gini index":52.4,"Investment (gross fixed)":{"quantity":13.7,"unit":"% of GDP"},"Budget":{"revenues":{"usd":3894000000},"expenditures":{"usd":4915000000}},"Public debt":{"quantity":55,"unit":"% of GDP"},"Inflation rate (consumer prices)":{"quantity":0.8,"unit":"%"},"Commercial bank prime lending rate":{"quantity":6.59,"unit":"%"},"Stock of narrow money":{"usd":2534000000},"Stock of broad money":{"usd":9666000000},"Stock of domestic credit":{"usd":10010000000},"Market value of publicly traded shares":{"usd":4432000000},"Industrial production growth rate":{"quantity":0.9,"unit":"%"},"Electricity - production":{"quantity":5445000000,"unit":"kWh"},"Electricity - consumption":{"quantity":4524000000,"unit":"kWh"},"Electricity - exports":{"quantity":78700000,"unit":"kWh"},"Electricity - imports":{"quantity":208400000,"unit":"kWh"},"Oil - production":{"quantity":0,"unit":"bbl/day"},"Oil - consumption":{"quantity":46000,"unit":"bbl/day"},"Oil - exports":{"quantity":1927,"unit":"bbl/day"},"Oil - imports":{"quantity":46310,"unit":"bbl/day"},"Oil - proved reserves":{"quantity":0,"unit":"bbl"},"Natural gas - production":{"quantity":0,"unit":"cu m"},"Natural gas - consumption":{"quantity":0,"unit":"cu m"},"Natural gas - exports":{"quantity":0,"unit":"cu m"},"Natural gas - imports":{"quantity":0,"unit":"cu m"},"Natural gas - proved reserves":{"quantity":0,"unit":"cu m"},"Current account balance":"$-907 million (2010 est.)","Exports":{"usd":4377000000},"Imports":{"usd":7980000000},"Reserves of foreign exchange and gold":{"usd":2882000000},"Debt - external":{"usd":11450000000},"Stock of direct foreign investment - at home":{"usd":7522000000},"Stock of direct foreign investment - abroad":{"usd":273000000},"Exchange rates":{},"industries":["food processing, beverages, petroleum, chemicals, fertilizer, textiles, furniture, light metals"],"agricultureProducts":["coffee","sugar","corn","rice","beans","oilseed","cotton","sorghum","beef","dairy products"],"exportCommodities":["offshore assembly exports","coffee","sugar","textiles and apparel","gold","ethanol","chemicals","electricity","iron and steel manufactures"],"exportPartners":["US 43.86%","Guatemala 13.92%","Honduras 13.22%","Nicaragua 5.65%"],"importCommodities":["raw materials","consumer goods","capital goods","fuels","foodstuffs","petroleum","electricity"],"importPartners":["US 29.79%","Mexico 10.26%","Guatemala 9.7%","China 4.5%","Honduras 4.4%"]},"communications":{"Telephones - main lines in use":1099000,"Telephones - mobile cellular":7566000,"Telephone system":{"general assessment":"multiple mobile-cellular providers are expanding services rapidly and in 2009 teledensity exceeded 100 per 100 persons;
