I apologise for not responding to your email more quickly. The formal proposal submission process starts at the end of next week (16/03) and, until then, the main channel of communication is supposed to be through this GitHub repo. That said, starting at some point next week, we will start assigning mentors to mentees, so you should hear from us then. Your candidacy is acknowledged. |

@jonbrenas apart from existing ideas can i propose my own idea ? |

Heyy @jonbrenas! My name is Bianca Sawant, a B.Tech CSE student. I was really interested in Project #2 (machine-learning taxon classifier for genomic classification in malaria mosquitoes). I wanted to ask, what will make you recognise our candidacy and assign us mentors? Is it getting a PR merged in this reporsitory, or making an introduction? |
|
Hi @star-lord1234, the process to apply is highlighted in the contributor's guidance document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/178LEZEsC0xbknHDId83k5XzIDRtnyVw243Ta0fhlvPM/edit?usp=sharing. Have you followed the steps described there? You will need to work on a PR but it doesn't need to be merged. |
|
hii @jonbrenas Looking forward to your thoughts so we can begin our planned iterations |
|
Hi @mandeepsingh2007, I will contact you later today or tomorrow. Could you send the other documents that were requested as well? |

Hii @jonbrenas Please take a look when you have a moment. I would really appreciate your feedback on these so we can lock in the final direction for the official submission |

Hi @jonbrenas, just following up regarding the proposal I shared over email a few days ago for the project “Building a Machine-Learning Taxon Classifier for Genomic Classification in Malaria Mosquitoes.” I understand this is a busy period with the GSoC window, but I’d really appreciate any quick feedback on whether the overall direction aligns well with the project goals so I can refine it accordingly. Happy to iterate quickly based on your suggestions. Thanks! |

Hi @jonbrenas , I am interested in applying for GSoC 2026 with MalariaGEN. What kind of proposal usually stands out for selection especially in terms of depth, structure, and prior contributions? Any tips or resources would be really helpful. Thanks |

@jonbrenas Hey, I have sent an email to support@malariagen.net regarding my proposal. I have linked my PRs. Could you please check it out? Thank you. Also, as mentioned in the email, I have created a colab notebook where I have tested out different methods. Could i send it to you for review? |

Hi, We are not allowed to communicate on ranking and selections. GSoC will be in contact with the people that they decide to select from our rankings. |
|
Hii @jonbrenas Just checked my GSOC dashboard and profile and unfortunately I am not selected for malariagen can you please give me feedback why I am rejected so that I can improve although I didn't recieve the mail yet rejection or selection |
|
Hi @mandeepsingh2007, we are not allowed to communicate on the decision process. All that I can tell you is that it was a very competitive process and that there were many proposals that we thought were of very high quality. |
