It might be worth looking at GitHub discussions, that way we can keep everything in one place.

I prefer something decentralized and open-source like Matrix but I understand if the developers want to keep it all in-house.

An unmoderated chatroom already exists over at reddit. No need to create another one.
Github discussions might be a thing that we will look into in the future again.
