I think it's time to remove Lando as a local tool and use only DDEV due to the much improved developer experience.

  • Lando has progressed minimally and still only allows using Docker Desktop as the engine, whereas DDEV offers a variety of docker engines to choose from
  • Lately Lando has seen more issues/quirks that has required time to workaround
  • DDEV is recommended by the Drupal Association
  • DDEV tends to be faster and more resource-efficient than Lando
  • DDEV is better integrated with Drupal with out-of-the-box support
  • Will simpify our maintenance and community support by only using a single tool

Interesting.. and potentially controversial...

I do agree with the arguments, and personally I've used ddev for years now.

But I think Agile Collective for one are still very much using Lando. Could be wrong though...

@msayoung @stephen-cox penny for your thoughts?

@danchamp is a Lando user too #232 (comment)

We have been using ddev for a couple of years now. I would be in favour as long as we don't pull the rug out from Lando users and it doesn't hamper or discourage contribution efforts.

Further pros:

  • Can leverage custom ddev commands.
  • More consistent results if we run tools in the same environment.

Discussing in Merge Tuesday:

  • @andybroomfield points out this is just for new projects. For existing projects people will have their set up already. This won't change that.

@msayoung and @stephen-cox aren't back till next week - we still use Lando heavily, and tbh i prefer its single file approach over ddevs. I

We as an agency use Lando with Orbstack (no Docker Desktop in sight). I'm very happy with it personally, performant and stable. No objection about LGD recommending DDEV, but it's a little presumptuous to suggest it should be removed now. :-)
