Getting Started
2+
===============
3+
4+
Installation
5+
------------
6+
7+
The linode-api package can be installed from pypi as shown:
8+
9+
.. code-block:: shell
10+
11+
pip install linode-api
12+
13+
If you prefer, you can clone the package from github_ and install it from source:
14+
15+
.. _github: https://github.com/Linode/python-linode-api
16+
17+
.. code-block:: shell
18+
19+
git clone git@github.com:Linode/python-linode-api
20+
cd python-linode-api
21+
python setup.py install
22+
23+
.. note::
24+
This library uses the "linode" namespace. This could conflict with other
25+
libraries intended to interact with older versions of the Linode API. If
26+
you depend on a python library to interact with older versions of the Linode
27+
API, consider using a virtualenv when installing this library.
28+
29+
Authentication
30+
--------------
31+
32+
In order to make requests to the Linode API, you will need a token. To generate
33+
one, log in to cloud.linode.com_, and on your profile_ click "Create a Personal
34+
Access Token".
35+
36+
.. _cloud.linode.com: https://cloud.linode.com
37+
.. _profile: https://cloud.linode.com/profile/tokens
38+
39+
.. note::
40+
You can also use an OAuth Token to authenticate to the API - see OAuth_
41+
for details.
42+
43+
.. _OAuth: #
44+
45+
When creating a Personal Access Token, you will be prompted for what scopes the
46+
token should be created with. These scopes control what parts of your account
47+
this token may be used to access - for more information, see `OAuth Scopes`_.
48+
Restricting what a token can access is more secure than creating one with access
49+
to your entire account, but can be less convenient since you would need to create
50+
a new token to access other parts of the account. For the examples on this page,
51+
your Personal Access Token must be able to view and create Linodes.
52+
53+
.. _OAuth Scopes: #
54+
55+
Listing your Linodes
56+
--------------------
57+
58+
Using the token you generated above, create a :py:class:`LinodeClient` object
59+
that will be used for all interactions with the API.
60+
61+
.. code-block:: python
62+
63+
from linode import LinodeClient
64+
client = LinodeClient(token)
65+
66+
This object will manage all requests you make through the API. Now that it's
67+
set up, you can use it to retrieve and print a list of your Linodes:
68+
69+
.. code-block:: python
70+
71+
my_linodes = client.linode.get_instances()
72+
73+
for current_linode in my_linodes:
74+
print(current_linode.label)
75+
76+
When retrieving collections of objects from the API, a list-like object is
77+
returned, and may be iterated over or indexed as a normal list.G
78+
79+
Creating a Linode
80+
-----------------
81+
82+
In order to create a Linode, we need a few pieces of information: what
83+
:py:class:Region to create the Linode in, what :py:class:Type of Linode to
84+
create, and what :py:class:Image to deploy to the new Linode. We can query
85+
for these values similarly to how we listed our Linodes above:
86+
87+
.. code-block:: python
88+
89+
available_regions = client.get_regions()
90+
91+
We could also use values that we know in advance to avoid the need to query the
92+
API - for example, we may know that we want a `g5-standard-4` Linode running the
93+
`linode/debian9` Image. Both objects and IDs are accepted when creating a Linode.
94+
95+
.. code-block:: python
96+
97+
chosen_region = available_regions[0]
98+
99+
new_linode, password = client.linode.create_instance(chosen_region,
100+
'g5-standard-4',
101+
image='linode/debian9')
102+
103+
:py:func:`create_instance` returns the newly-created Linode object and the
104+
root password that was generated for it. This Linode will boot automatically,
105+
and should be available shortly. Finally, let's print out the results so we
106+
can access our new server.
107+
108+
.. code-block:: python
109+
110+
print("ssh root@{} - {}".format(new_linode.ipv4[0], password))
111+
112+
