Datasette is a data exploration and data set publishing tool that has some objectives in common with GraphQL compiler, e.g. that it should work well with an arbitrary dataset. It would be worth spending some time to look into how its test suite works and seeing if we get inspiration for how to handle some of our own testing in a better way.
