If you try to import an album (e.g. from bandcamp) that's already on musicbrainz but with partial metadata will it propose edits to the existing release, or will it try to create a duplicate release? Is there a standard way to verify if a release is already imported?

It will show that the release is already linked if it can find it in the MB, like so:

Then it's up to you, whether you want to import it anew or update an existing release. Both are possible.
