On Linux, Windows and Mac, we recommend the simplest way, i.e. using the TiddlyDesktop application.
TiddlyRoam is a modified clone of the parent project TiddlyWiki and the ways to install it on any operating system are very numerous indeed. Most of the methods are described here: https://tiddlywiki.com/#GettingStarted

When I unpack the file on Linux, there are about 5 different executables, and it isn't made clear which one will start the program. I tried all of them but none of them opened up tiddlydesktop

I am not familiar with TiddlyDesktop on Linux but:

On Windows and Mac, I open the TiddlyRoam (or TiddlyWiki) HTML file with Firefox and use the Firefox Add-in Timimi to enable automatic saving of the TiddlyRoam HTML file on my hard drive. It also contains a back-up feature. Read also here.

I also posted the issue on Talk TiddlyWiki.

Try https://github.com/tiddly-gittly/TidGi-Desktop , it can import html wiki like this one, and is a beautiful app.
