  • PR Description

Some of our menus let you pick a value for some option (e.g. the sort order menus for branches and commits). It's nice to see which one is the current value when opening such a menu, so this PR implements that.

image

For menus that also have key bindings, the radio button goes between the key and the label.

As an alternative, I considered selecting the current value when the menu is opened; however, we currently have no menus where we select a different entry than the first one, and it might be confusing for people who are used to opening a menu and then pressing down-arrow a certain number of times to get to a particular value.

  • Please check if the PR fulfills these requirements

Hello @stefanhaller - the code looks good, but it doesn't make sense for me to approve it since it's probably better to wait for Jesse to see and approve this change.

While I was testing this code, it came to my mind that maybe (in the future) it would be great to have a specialized component to handle these radio-button-like settings. Showing a marker between the keybindings and the description is clear enough, but what do you think about rendering it like this?

[ ] a description 1
[x] b description 2
[ ] c description 3

Also, using a specialized component would allow us to move the selection logic to the component itself instead of letting the developer handle it. Do you think this would help keep the codebase cleaner?

@AzraelSec Thanks for the input.

That's two different questions: how we render it, and what's the API. They are independent; I could keep the API the same but change the rendering as you suggest, or we could introduce a specialized component but still render it like I do here.

As for the rendering: I changed it to your suggestion and pushed it as a different branch (show-current-option-in-menus-2); however, I chose [✓] instead of [x] as I think that looks better, and I also kept it after the keybinding as I like the keybinding to always be the leftmost thing.

I'm a bit undecided which version I prefer, and would be happy to accept a majority vote. I think I have a slight tendency towards the bare since I find it cleaner. (Also, the code is simpler.)

As for the API: I'm unsure about that one as well, but I feel the current solution is adequate enough. I don't see a big risk of clients accidentally checking two entries, for example. It's just not the biggest problem in the code base, and I'd rather spend my time on more important things.

Thanks for considering my feedback, @stefanhaller. I agree with treating the rendering and the API as separate and independent themes.

I checked out your branch where you implemented the alternative UI, and I personally prefer it over the original one. In my opinion

  • it makes more evident to the users the distinction between a canonical menu and a radio button one
  • its complexity in code is comparable to the original

That said, I want to avoid blocking this PR, so feel free to proceed with your first implementation if you think it's the best option.

Regarding the API, creating a specific component could still be an improvement, but it's definitely not a priority. I'd still be happy to experiment a bit with this theme after the current PR gets merged into master, if it's okay with you.

OK. Thinking about it more though, I guess we should consider using (✓) instead of [✓]. The square brackets look more like a checkbox, using round parens may make it look more like radio buttons. The thinking here is that we might introduce checkboxes as well in the future, e.g. for something like a preferences dialog. (There are still questions around that, e.g. how to toggle a checkbox without closing the dialog, but that can be solved later; for now it's only about the visual appearance.)

@jesseduffield Are you following this? Any opinion?

That said, I want to avoid blocking this PR,

No, the input is valuable and we should try to get this right instead of just doing something.

I'd still be happy to experiment a bit with this theme after the current PR gets merged into master, if it's okay with you.

Well sure, as long as I don't have to spend time on that... 😄

I agree: the bare tick is more aesthetic but using parentheses is superior because it lets us disambiguate radios from checkboxes.

OK. I force-pushed the branch to change the implementation: MenuItem now has a Widget field that lets you draw either checkboxes or radio buttons. See commit message of first commit.

LGTM, great work

For checkboxes it probably doesn't really make sense to use them yet, because
we'd have to find a way how you can toggle them without closing the dialog; but
we already provide rendering for them to lay the ground.

But radio buttons can be used already, because for those it is ok to close the
dialog when choosing a different option (as long as there is only one grounp of
radio buttons in the panel, that is).

#### What's Changed

Thanks to all contributors who helped make this release happen! There's
a lot of first-time contributors on this release as well so kudos to you
all.

There's quite a few things in this release. I'm going to single out a
couple that have changed my workflow.

##### Base branch stuff

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/9f50824a-6221-4ca0-9cf3-a4d45cc43262

##### Easier rebase onto base branch

*(Add command to rebase onto base branch by
[@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://togithub.com/stefanhaller) in
[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3615](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3615))*

When my feature branch gets out of date with the main branch, I like to
rebase it onto the main branch. Up until now, that's required:

- Navigating to the main branch
- Pressing 'f' to fast-forward it onto its upstream branch
- Pressing 'r' to rebase the checked-out branch onto the main branch

That takes too long! Now you can just press 'r' followed by 'b' to
rebase onto the base branch (which defaults to origin/main).

##### See the divergence count from the base branch

*(Divergence from base branch display by
[@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://togithub.com/stefanhaller) in
[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3613](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3613))*

You can now also configure to see the divergence from a branch and its
base branch with the following config:

```yml
gui:
    showDivergenceFromBaseBranch: arrowAndNumber # or 'onlyArrow'
```

This shows the divergence count in blue, next to the yellow count of
divergence from the upstream branch. This is admittedly noisy, so it's
an opt-in feature. But I think the noise is worth it.

If you set the config value to 'onlyArrow' it's a lot less noisy:

<img width="891" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/470cb003-8fc6-4a72-aa04-6e228c49f381">

##### See detailed divergence from base branch

*(Add command to show divergence from base branch as a left-right log by
[@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://togithub.com/stefanhaller) in
[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3614](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3614))*

By pressing 'u' then 'b' on a branch you can see the divergence view for
that branch compared to its base branch

##### Improved 'Find commit for fixup' feature

*(Improve the "Find base commit for fixup" command by
[@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://togithub.com/stefanhaller) in
[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3602](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3602))*

'Find commit for fixup' is not a very catchy name for this feature but I
can't think of anything better at the moment. Nevertheless! The idea is
that you often want to know for a given set of changes, which commit
ought they be included in? Just press `ctrl+f` when in the files panel
and lazygit will jump the cursor to the appropriate commit to fixup.

With this release, the feature is smarter and more lenient so it's more
likely to find you a match. If you haven't tried this out you should
really give it a go!

#### What's Changed

Thanks to all contributors who helped make this release happen! There's
a lot of first-time contributors on this release as well so kudos to you
all.

There's quite a few things in this release. I'm going to single out a
couple that have changed my workflow.

##### Base branch stuff

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/9f50824a-6221-4ca0-9cf3-a4d45cc43262

##### Easier rebase onto base branch

*(Add command to rebase onto base branch by
[@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://togithub.com/stefanhaller) in
[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3615](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3615))*

When my feature branch gets out of date with the main branch, I like to
rebase it onto the main branch. Up until now, that's required:

- Navigating to the main branch
- Pressing 'f' to fast-forward it onto its upstream branch
- Pressing 'r' to rebase the checked-out branch onto the main branch

That takes too long! Now you can just press 'r' followed by 'b' to
rebase onto the base branch (which defaults to origin/main).

##### See the divergence count from the base branch

*(Divergence from base branch display by
[@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://togithub.com/stefanhaller) in
[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3613](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3613))*

You can now also configure to see the divergence from a branch and its
base branch with the following config:

```yml
gui:
    showDivergenceFromBaseBranch: arrowAndNumber # or 'onlyArrow'
```

This shows the divergence count in blue, next to the yellow count of
divergence from the upstream branch. This is admittedly noisy, so it's
an opt-in feature. But I think the noise is worth it.

If you set the config value to 'onlyArrow' it's a lot less noisy:

<img width="891" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/470cb003-8fc6-4a72-aa04-6e228c49f381">

##### See detailed divergence from base branch

*(Add command to show divergence from base branch as a left-right log by
[@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://togithub.com/stefanhaller) in
[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3614](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3614))*

By pressing 'u' then 'b' on a branch you can see the divergence view for
that branch compared to its base branch

##### Improved 'Find commit for fixup' feature

*(Improve the "Find base commit for fixup" command by
[@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://togithub.com/stefanhaller) in
[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3602](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3602))*

'Find commit for fixup' is not a very catchy name for this feature but I
can't think of anything better at the moment. Nevertheless! The idea is
that you often want to know for a given set of changes, which commit
ought they be included in? Just press `ctrl+f` when in the files panel
and lazygit will jump the cursor to the appropriate commit to fixup.

With this release, the feature is smarter and more lenient so it's more
likely to find you a match. If you haven't tried this out you should
really give it a go!

##### Other Enhancements 🔥

- Add Squash merge by
[@&#8203;noahfraiture](https://togithub.com/noahfraiture) in
[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3566](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3566)
- Now when you press `shift+m` you get the option to do a regular merge
or a squash merge. If you already have muscle memory for regular merge;
don't worry: it's the same sequence of keypresses.
- Improve "Find base commit for fixup" command when there are changes
for master commits by
[@&#8203;stefanhaller](https://togithub.com/stefanhaller) in
[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3645](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3645)
- Allow setting the similarity threshold for detecting renames by
[@&#8203;isti115](https://togithub.com/isti115) in
[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3025](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3025)
- For this, press ')' and '(' to increase/decrease the similarity
threshold.

[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3687](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3687)
- 2-6x less memory usage when dealing with lots of commits. HUGE
improvement.
- Focus on local commits view after moving code into new commit by
[@&#8203;AzraelSec](https://togithub.com/AzraelSec) in

[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3623](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3623)
- You can now increase the height of the selected side panel when you've
configured the accordion effect
    ```yml
    gui:
      expandFocusedSidePanel: true
      expandedSidePanelWeight: 3
    ```

[https://github.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3587](https://togithub.com/jesseduffield/lazygit/pull/3587)
- This lets you select a range of commits and update the author / set
the co-author on all of them at once.

##### Feature: exclude files based on a pattern

Use the `-exclude-files=PATTERN` to exclude certain files or directories
from the upload. Repeat the option for each pattern do you need. The
following directories are excluded automatically:

-   @&#8203;eaDir/
-   @&#8203;\__thumb/
-   SYNOFILE_THUMB_\*.\*
-   Lightroom Catalog/
-   thumbnails/
-   .DS_Store/

Example, the following command excludes any files in directories called
backup or draft and any file with name finishing with "copy)" as
PXL\_20231006\_063121958 (another copy).jpg:

```sh
immich-go -sever=xxxxx -key=yyyyy upload -exclude-files=backup/ -exclude-files=draft/ -exclude=copy).*  /path/to/your/files
```
