Branching and Tagging

Before a major or minor release, component leads are required to branch their repository. After any release is completed (whether major, minor, or service), component leads are required to tag their repository.

Branching

Branching is typically performed only before major or minor releases. Service releases do not typically branch. Branching is a major event, and because of that, a JIRA will be opened listing in-depth steps that must be taken to comply with the branch.

Please see https://issues.jboss.org/browse/JBIDE-18155 for an example of such steps.

Tagging

After a release has been complete, an email will be sent out to jbosstools-dev@lists.jboss.org with the following or similar content:

Component leads, please tag your repositories!

$ git fetch jbosstools jbosstools-4.2.x #assuming remote is called
jbosstools, also often called origin
$ git checkout FETCH_HEAD
$ git tag jbosstools-4.2.0.Final
$ git push jbosstools jbosstools-4.2.0.Final

Component leads should ensure that there have been no NEW commits after the release but before tagging. The goal is to make sure the proper SHA / commit is tagged with what is in the release.
