Once drag starts there's no way to cancel

There doesn't seem to be a way of cancelling a drag once it started. In most UI supporting drag-drop the ESC key causes the drag to be aborted.
The problem here is that once the drag started, even if you drop out of the container, the window or even the browser the drop still takes place.
