How can I build HLS 2.9.0.0 with GHC 9.8.4

2.9.0.1 doesn't seem to work, but 2.9.0.0 doesn't compile either....

Are you building manually from source, or are you asking how to compile the HLS binary with GHCup?

For GHCup, you can try to use HEAD:

> ghcup compile hls --ghc 9.8.4 --git-ref master

or set the index-state for the release:

> ghcup compile hls -v 2.9.0.1 --ghc 9.8.4 -- --index-state="2025-02-25T00:00:00Z"

See the issue #4493, where we say we will soon have binaries for GHC 9.8.4 in the next release.

So v2.9.0.1 doesn't seem to work at all with GHC 9.8.4. It compiles, but doesn't work. I'm now trying to compile v2.9.0.0 for HC 9.8.4 because I've heard other say it works, but I can't get it to compile

I dont think building from source will solve this particular issue, it looks like a genuine bug, not caused by being a prebuilt binary.
I think it is likely a better idea to try to use a different GHC version, for example 9.6.6 or even 9.4.8 as we didn't have any such reports for these versions, yet.
You don't even need to compile from source for these versions.
