Currently, the host can connect to the plugin exclusively through network (localhost) and Unix sockets.
When it's necessary to avoid using networking (for instance, due to untrusted applications on the same host or to prevent triggering a firewall), the Unix socket serves as the only option. However, Unix sockets are incompatible with Windows applications.
Enabling communication via a stdin/stdout pair in addition to the TCP/socket protocol would be highly advantageous.
